Answering your AdBlue questions

Answering your AdBlue questions

Here at Compass Fuel Oils, we are the UK’s leading provider of fuel oils like red diesel and AdBlue, as well as lubricants and greases. And as a result, we are often asked questions about AdBlue. Some of the most frequently asked questions, and our expert answers, are outlined below:

1.What is AdBlue?

AdBlue is a diesel exhaust fluid, made from a very high purity aqueous urea solution. When applied to diesel engine vehicles, this can remove harmful pollutants, particularly nitrogen dioxide and other nitrogen oxides, from diesel exhaust gases, by converting these to harmless substances.

2.Which vehicles need AdBlue?

Many new diesel cars, that were registered after September 2015 will need to use AdBlue. This is because they are built with the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology that helps to lower emissions as part of an EU regulation.

For commercial vehicles, AdBlue is necessary for a range of vehicles including buses and coaches, vans trucks and even fire engines.

If your vehicle does require AdBlue, there will be a separate tank with a blue plastic cap labelled AdBlue. There will also most likely be a guage in the cab to show how much is in the tank.

3.What happens if I run out of AdBlue?

If your vehicle is running low on AdBlue, your vehicle will give an indicator of this according the manufacturers instructions. Ignoring this warning, and running out of AdBlue completely, can have negative consequences. If you are still driving, the vehicle will reduce power and performance to limit the emissions, and once you stop, the engine will not turn back on again. This can be incredibly dangerous for any driver, and the consequences for commercial heavy vehicle drivers can be even more dire.

4. How can I monitor AdBlue levels?

Whether you run a fleet of vehicles, or its just for your own personal vehicle, knowing how much AdBlue is left in the tank at any time can be very beneficial. For commercial and industrial businesses, you could consider our Fuel Monitor here at at Compass Fuels. These fuel monitors use wireless radar to transmit information regarding the amount of fuel in any tank. This provides incredibly accurate and precise readings and means that your vehicles will not run out of AdBlue unexpectedly, causing you to lose money.
